Silver Travel - Email Newsletter

Dear Silver Travellers

Given the recent positive FCO advice on travelling overseas, and particularly to parts of Europe, we are bringing you the no-fly, get there under your own steam newsletter! We’re including the UK too, of course, as many of you are keen to take staycations this year and enjoy the walking and glorious countryside – just as we are in this photo (see the end of the newsletter for our caption competition).

Taking your car abroad is pretty straightforward, although we strongly advise that you check the AA website to ensure you have all the information you need and comply with each country’s requirements. Please note that some of the rules change on 1 January 2021, so for next year, you should check for updates.

You may like to take the train for part of your journey, try Railbookers who have extensive knowledge of the European network and pick up a hire care once you arrive closer to your destination. Avis offer 10% discount to Silver Travel Advisor members in many European countries.

Let us know what your thoughts on holidays and travel are as lockdown is easing. Complete our latest survey and you could win one of three £50 Amazon vouchers.

Take the ferry or Le Shuttle with Euro Tunnel

If you’re going to Europe you’ll need to get across the English Channel of course. Le Shuttle will take you from Folkestone to Calais in just 35 minutes, it’s speedy and easy! We were amazed at the range of ferry crossings available to France and Holland not to mention over to Ireland, Northern Ireland and all the islands – the Isle of Man, the Scilly Isles and the Channel Islands. And there are no luggage restrictions either, so take what you will.

Greece – always special, always interesting

Getting to Greece under your own steam is very doable – it just takes a little longer! If island hopping is no longer your thing, you can stay at stunning villas tucked all over the islands for larger family groups from CV Villas, perfect for multi-generational holidays, days of lazing by the pool or wandering in charming countryside. Or try Simpson Travel for on-the-beach small, friendly hotels, some just for adults, serving delicious locally grown food, with a relaxed atmosphere. The drive to Bari or Brindisi in Italy, where you pick up ferries to the Greek islands, is likely to take 3 days (about 22/24 hours actual driving), however if you have time, why not make the journey part of your holiday?

Alternatively, Sunvil have properties in Corfu that you can travel to by train, just 2 days journey with an overnight in Milan. This is ‘slow’ travel at its finest, sit back and let Europe unfold before your very eyes, whilst you unwind.

Italy – languid, leisurely and cultured

Think lazy days on a bike, gently pedalling along quiet Italian backroads before a fine supper, in rural retreats. With Cycling for Softies, you can drive to your destination and then go from car to bike and immerse yourself in the Mediterranean way of life – no rushing allowed! Eurocamp offer the joys of holiday parcs filled with amenities and fun at the coast or in the countryside in Italy, although you can stay close to your self-catering accommodation, with its outside space, if you prefer. Villas in Italy are a fabulous way to holiday, from The Lakes to Tuscany and Puglia, with its trulli, lingering sunsets, long lunches from noon to dusk and inspirational architecture. All gently enhanced with local wines. Driving to Milan takes 2 days, about 14 hours driving, and to Florence 3 days, about 16 hours at the wheel.

Germany and the Netherlands for forests, lakes and canals

And now we think about it, a jolly good beer or two as well! With a ferry crossing and drive of just 10 hours in total to the Black Forest and considerably less to The Netherlands, the wonders of Eurocamp parcs are on offer as is a self-drive boating holiday along Dutch waterways. All in your own time, with the chance to sample local life as you go.

France – just a short journey away, holidays a plenty

Our nearest continental neighbour is also one of our favourite places to holiday – Normandy and Brittany are Celtic cousins, the Atlantic coast is a dramatic draw, the Mediterranean offers a taste of glamour, whilst the rivers and countryside of central France provide a natural playground and endless beauty spots. And the Alps are a hiking and skiing paradise. There’s camping in almost every region with Eurocamp, villas of all sizes, especially in the south, close to St Tropez, perfect for a seafront stroll and people watching. Or maybe a beachside house on the idyllic Ile de Ré with its peaceful lifestyle and beautiful coast, or a characterful property in Provence will hit the spot for you. Cycling in France is a major national sport, however there’s no need for lycra or a yellow jersey with Cycling for Softies – the name really does describe it well. It is a holiday, after all! And Nicols self-drive boating holidays have got France covered, quiet rivers and canals, where there is no rush. You’ll be taught all you need to know before leaving the marina. Drive a few hours from the ferry port, then take to the water again, although this time you’re in charge.
