Dear Silver Travellers

Silver Travel Advisor is 10 years old! We are celebrating with a super new logo and here’s the team meeting for a cuppa, with guest Tony Maniscalco, chatting about our escapades and triumphs over the last decade. We’ve come a long way from Debbie’s original kitchen table meeting with Taki (head of all things technical) although, for the moment, we are back at our various kitchen tables and home offices. We are delighted you’ve joined us on our journey so far and look forward to reading about where and how you travel in the future. Our marvellous Patron, John Carter, who’s been with us from the beginning, muses on his recent Covid-19 vaccine.

Travel industry veteran, Noel Josephides, founder of Sunvil, shares his wisdom on booking your next trips: be financially secure and look for flexibility. If things don’t go to plan, you’ll want to be covered.

Enjoy a whistle-stop tour of our first ten years.

The world was first explored by sea and in many cases, it remains the best way to discover a new destination, from the Mediterranean to Malaysia, from Alaska to Australia, from Scandinavia to South America. This month, we spotlight Ketchikan, Alaska with Princess Cruises.

Leisurely holidays on UK waterways

Pottering has become an art form these days, and as we’re all hoping for the chance to get away later this year, why not potter then too? On an ABC Boat Hire narrowboat, which is neatly fitted out, you can take time and revel in the joy of being on water, seeing the countryside from a different viewpoint. Pottering perfection indeed. No problem if you’re a novice, all will be explained before you leave the marina. Special offer until 28 February 2021.

The Silver Travel Book Club

This month we’re reading Ben Atkin’s marvellous travel romp through coach tours The Gran Tour: Travels with my Elders. When Ben Aitken learnt that his gran had enjoyed a four-night holiday including four three-course dinners, four cooked breakfasts, four games of bingo, a pair of excursions, sixteen pints of lager and luxury return coach travel, all for a hundred pounds, he thought, that’s the life, and signed himself up. Six times over.

Good value aside, what Ben was really after was the company of his elders. A series of coach holidays ensued during which Ben attempts to shake off his thirty-something blues by getting old as soon as possible. Read Petra Shepherd’s interview with Ben and you could win a copy of this hilarious book too.

Like a rare spirit, vintage storytelling never grows old

Ernest Hemingway gave the somewhat dubious advice, "Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut." The founders of the new Tonic Magazine didn’t quite follow Hemingway’s advice, and have poured their passion – and life savings – into a high-spirited journal which combines travel, adventure and a few tipples along the way. The highly collectable first issue will leave you thirsty for more. The cost is £15 and there’s a 5% discount for Silver Travellers.

Head to Polar Bear country

Sail with Hurtigruten to Svalbard for a glimpse of the ‘ice bear’ as some call the polar bear. Although they are born on land, polar bears spend most of their time at sea using sea ice platforms to hunt seals. Whilst these are the polar bear’s favourite food, seals are wily creatures and 98% of hunts end in failure, so polar bears fill up on small mammals, birds, eggs and vegetation. Magnificent creatures in a unique landscape.
